Central Rocks!

Our topic last term was Central Rocks! We were asked to create a display for our school to show what Central School means to each of us. In Room 5 we did lots of thinking about what was special about our school and we made clay tiles to show our ideas. After we had created the tiles Esther from the Suter Art Gallery fired them for us and we painter them. We have displayed them in our new corridoor and they look lovely. We also wrote labels to explain our tiles. If you would like to read what is on the label, look on our individual blogs because we copied the information onto a posting. Our Syndicate is so pleased with our presentations we have invited parents to come on a tour with us so we can see the work everyone has been doing.

Rikki, the Room 5 Kiwi

Our little Kiwi, Rikki,is going off on his travels today. Dr Potaka will take him for a trip to a different country and leave him at another school. He will stay there for a while and they might take photos of him so we can see what he is doing. We hope they will take photos and post them on a Blog so we can connect with Rikki and his new class. We wonder where Rikki will end up. Here he is with Tom and Rohan looking at our world map.
Rikki has a sister called Rachel. She's going to stay with us until Eli goes back to Alaska. We hope Eli can take her to his new class there and we can make a connection to another class.

Goodbye and Good Luck Rikki.

The Buskers

A group of children who have violin and piano lessons at our school are celebrating the end of term by going busking today. Rohan from our class is playing the keyboard. Rohan's mother Tania, teaches violin to the rest of the buskers. They played at a concert for us to hear how much they have learned in only one term. It was a great concert and we hope they get lots of money.

Room 5 Has a New Teacher

Room 5 are so lucky because we have a new teacher called Kere who comes to help us every Wednesday. Sometimes he helps us do our Maths and sometimes he helps with our Reading. He's already taught a Handwriting lesson and taught some Spelling Groups. He's always nice and cheerful. It has been really cool today because Kere has been helping us to insert our photograph into a Word document. This is Kere's last Wednesday with us but it's not so bad because he'll be coming to our class on Thursdays next term. We're very lucky because Kere will be able to help us with gymnastics on Thursdays next term.

Buddy Time

Every Friday we have Buddy Time with our buddies. This year our buddies are in Room 11. They are five years old and they have just started school this year. Some people have buddies who have only just started school last week. We look after them if they have problems in the playground and every week we arrange to meet them for a play. Sometimes they show us their work. A few weeks ago they interviewed us so they could learn how to ask a question. This week we all played in the big adventure playground. Tracey, our Buddy Class teacher said we were helping our buddies to get confident. We love looking after them

Interviewing Past Pupils

We have been doing lots of voice recording lately and Viv says we look really confident with our little voice recorder. First we recorded our own mihi, then we recorded our poems about the Swimming Carnival but most recently we have been interviewing people who came to Central School long ago.
James Hebberd is a past pupil of our school and even our room. Viv was his teacher too. He also remembers his time with Dave in Room 2 and when he was a Year 1 or 2 Christine was his teacher.

Our Learning Styles

We did a questionnaire to find out which was our preferred learning style out of Visual, Auditory and Kinesthetic.

This is an example of one of the questions.

I learn to play a newgame by
a. Reading the instructions,
b. My teacher explaining it,
c. Playing the game.

We were surprised to find theat some people scored almost the same in two or three areas. The other interesting thing was that only two people are strong in visual and they are strong in other areas as well. See if you can find their other strengths.

Peter and the Wolf

This week there is a show called "Peter and the Wolf" being performed at the Nelson School of Music. Some people from the play came to school and showed us about it. We heard the story, listened to the music and had a turn of the puppets. Some children from our class already have tickets for the show.

Rumplestiltskin

We have been learning about traditional stories and legends. The people in the Fantails reading group practised and performed the play of Rumplestiltskin for us. Max played Rumplestiltskin. Hannah played two parts, the royal messenger and the King. nikita played the Queen. It was a terrific play.
